One year on from the tragedy of the Morandi bridge collapse, Genoa is honouring the affected area by bringing it into colour with murals by 15 internationally renowned artists. Agostino Iacurci was invited by Walk The Line to join On The Wall, a project that will transform Certosa, the neighbourhood most devastated by the collapse, which left 43 people dead and many more homeless, into an open-air art gallery.

Each mural has been designed to be site-specific, based on questions and research that the artists have undertaken to understand the area.

Agostino’s mural is located right above the market, and it’s also visible from the transit-heavy side of the Polcevere river. It occupies two walls of a local building, and thanks to its large scale and rich colour palette with a dominant red hue, it brings an invigorating energy to the area.

“The encompassing theme of all murals is Joy - but not in its abstract and individualistic interpretation,” explains Emanuela Caronti of Walk The Line. “It’s the Artists’ gift to Certosa, an invitation to look ahead with hope.  Art is not the solution to all the problems, but can alleviate the lives of the people in the area.”
