The latest episode of Diver & Aguilar’s collaboration with Riders sees the duo bringing a splash of vibrant colors to the pages of the Italian magazine to warm up our long cold winter.
Bright and bold bespoke tailored suits are worn with effortless class by models of African origins, clearly showing that being daring and bold is not a prerequisite of the youths.
The African inspiration is present on every aspect of the shooting: the Peter Beard wink in the layout adds an extra layer of energy and the setting, which is very abstract, could be a shanty town in Africa or an underground nightclub in Marrakech.
In fact is a squat in Islington, London. Once again the capital of Great Britain shows its multi-ethnicity and versatility and its ability to recreate even the most exotic environment is astonishing.
“I have always been fascinated by the ‘theatrical’ fantasy that can be created using Avant Garde or Haute Couture pieces - they can make our photographs more dramatic or add to the filmic quality of the concept”, Mike Diver says. “Although I want to understand the principles behind the collections I’m not silently following the trends; you would never find us shooting something based on ‘This season’s pastel colors’. Recreating an African inspired shoot is exactly the sort of foundation we can work from to produce the vibrant project you see before you.”
Unfortunately London wasn’t able to recreate a vaguely mild African climate and throughout the whole shooting the thermometer was well below zero degrees - a quick reminder for everyone’s wandering imagination of the geographical location of the island.
Despite the freezing temperatures Diver & Aguilar captured the richness, the beauty and the warmth of the subjects with highly dramatic photography, once again raising the bar. Diver & Aguilar have two other shoots down the pipeline with Riders, watch this space for more information.
