Last week we posted on Machas’ Facebook page Gergely Wootsch’s brilliant short “This Is Not Real”, fresh from a rave review from the folks at It’s Nice That. We met with Gergely, who’s part of Beakus Studio, to ask him a bit more about his fantastic debut.
Where did you got the first idea for your short?
I think it all originated from my experience of studying in a ‘post-industrial’ town in North-England. It’s surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire landscape but the town itself is heavily industrialized. This huge contrast made me think about the relationship between the environment and the individual.
What was your inspiration for characters in This Is Not Real?
(The other) David Bradley from Ken Loach’s Kes.
Which were the challenges to work on such story?
This is my first narrative short film and consequently it was a real steep learning curve! I made many mistakes (some bigger, some smaller) but in exchange I feel I learned a lot too. I particularly enjoyed the writing part, it was something I never really focused on before.
This Is Not Real was made for your graduation essay at the RCA - did you feel that you had to follow specific requirements?
I assumed there was a certain expectation of quality, but otherwise no, not really… The really great thing about the RCA is you get to develop your own work.
What are you working on at the moment? what are your future plans?
I’m working on a short film at the moment due to be finished this November.
